Summer 2017 Series Episode 9

Oops, I am perfect. Smoke & Mirrors to Civility.

Caveman & Courage

Humans think and say the darnedest things about others! This past week our country (USA) has been rocked with racial tension with both sides name calling. I find it interesting celebrity (media, comedians, politicians) receive so much play in name calling, back slurs, and downright more hate mongering.

I tend to stay away from the news, politics, and other negative scenarios. There is no courage in being of caveman mentality beating each other over the head with words, actions, and deed.

Personally my life is not perfect; my business and family navigate through the gambit of emotions, conflict, love, fear, anger, joy, connection, and community.

I CHOOSE to find value in others before judgment or bias. I CHOOSE to leave my garbage bag of “stuff” outside the door; this creates a clear space to find commonalities, community, and connection to civility.

Oops, I am perfect. Smoke & Mirrors to Civility.

10 Core Leadership Characteristics of Self: giving you space to lead others without blame.

  1. Take responsibility for your words, actions, and deeds (no excuses).
  2. Model with integral behavior; say what you do.
  3. Self control; slow to judgment and quick to praise.
  4. Wisdom is an integral part of decision making; knowledge experience, community input gives confidence to the process. If it turned out wrong, go back to #1 on this list.
  5. Lead gently and firmly, putting value of humans over all else.
  6. Respect others and live the Golden Rule (we cannot ask others to do what we are not offering).
  7. Do the right thing; even when it is the most painful thing to do.
  8. Trust first so others have a clear path to follow.
  9. Be open to teach and learn; daily be open to teaching and learning.
  10. Create a system; systems create less confusion of expectation, communication, and opens an environment of loving humans first.

Summer 2017 Series Episode 4

Be Selfish to be Selfless!

Be Selfish to be Selfless

Posted by Selkirk Coaching and Training Group on Friday, June 23, 2017

Loving Friday’s with all of you! Last Friday of June and we are ramping up to a juicy series. Today challenge yourself to find area’s to be selfish so you can add more value to others and be selfless.

God has blessed each and every one of you with combined gifts and talents no one else can bring to the table. We are meant to be individuals to serve the world as a whole.

My selfish story: a few years ago in Columbus, Ohio I had an opportunity to learn from renowned business coach. We were sitting in a small group of about five in a circle. The coach went around and asked us all questions, and then we masterminded on a few topics. From there this coach proceeded to look me straight in the eye and stated, “you need to be more selfish.” My immediate response was discomfort and tears (I rarely ever cry or in public for that matter).

Basically, put your oxygen mask on first!

Great coaches implement a delicate balance of  not pushing you off the edge while letting you find discomfort in problem solving or transforming to the next level of your success. Being “selfish” is one of those examples of discomfort so you can transform into next step. Break down your resistance for a moment of discomfort to transform to the next level.

In the video I talked about being at the table. What this means is are you serving people and places you have no business adding value to? Is it your time to be at the table?

Few questions for yourself:

  • Are you sitting at the right table?
  • Can you voice your boundaries clearly and effectively?
  • When serving do I walk away with a full cup or an empty one?

Selfish and selfless leads to one core tool and that is your voice. Use your voice to create boundaries into selfless opportunities to serve within your gifts. The world needs what you have to offer; speak up!

Thank you for joining me on our Summer Fire It Up Friday Series.

Dream Your Dream

Red Shoe Courage Workshop

Dream, Vision, and Plan beyond today!

In 2013 I had a dream, vision, and then made a plan and that was to share my story to lift others to a better tomorrow. As you grow up into adulthood the dreaming “button” gets hidden and I am here to tell you there is not such thing as you are too old to be a “dreamer”. We are NEVER too old to dream, vision, and plan beyond today.

This weekend I had the utmost pleasure and blessing to pour into a group of extraordinary ladies during the signature event From Grace to Red Shoe Courage. And the following is just one a few outpouring of Gods grace during the event as hearts were stirred up, spirits were lifted, and old truths were shed!

God delights in your purposeful passion. Dream your dream and change your today for the tomorrow’s God desires for you! “There is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live…This is the gift of God.” ECC: 3:12-14 NIV

This is a note posted regarding the event and my dream in 2013 was to serve those who love what I do, value what I do, and let me dream my dream.

“Shout out to Tracy Worley! I was so blessed to participate in her Grace to Red Shoe Courage Workshop last night and today! She has the ability to tell her story, focus on truth telling scripture and help the attendees draw closer to God and release strongholds! Time and time again I’m in awe of the amazing women God has put in my life! It was great to attend the event with  and many new friends! Make sure you don’t miss Tracy’s next event!!” Shelly Wear

“It was incredible! I’m so glad I got to go last night, but sorry I missed today.” Stephanie Neil Gaertig

The season of fall is my favorite, with the changing color, crisp morning air and the reminder everything and Tracy Worley You Mattereveryone must have a season of shedding the old and preparing for the new.

Everything matters if you believe in your success, future, and those around you. Simple questions to put into your morning reflection as you set your priorities and purpose:

  • Ask: What or who do I need to ask to help achieve the next goal?
  • Act: Now that you know, it is your responsibility to take action and/or delegate action.
  • Believe: You are now asked to sit back within action and believe! This is the hardest of the three actions as it takes time, perseverance, and tenacious leadership in this stage (modeling, patience, and belief).

Taking time daily lets your thought, action, and beliefs catch up to what you are asking and then question apply the, why. As leaders we tend to forget to continue to ask the WHY and keep moving.

Mark 9:23-24 “…anything is possible if a person believes….I do believe, but help me have no doubts.”

If you have a project you have launched over 3 months ago and have not taken a series “time-out” in reflection of why you started it, where is it now, does it need adjustments, does the project fit within your values and serving clients and or employees? Remember everything matters and everything is possible when you believe.

Challenge Question: Where are your doubts: Renew your day, ask, act, and believe because you matter!

Reality of Leadership Did You Ask to Lead

Where is reality kicking your leadership pants?

Tracy Worley is America’s leading grace coach, international key-note speaker, trainer, syndicated radio host, author, and potential seeker, strategist and CEO of three values leadership based organizations. Reality of Leadership Tracy WorleyMost of us end up in a leadership role by being promoted or asked to take over projects at an ever growing rapid pace. Common practice is to promote those with seniority, even if the employee is given no management or leadership training.

The numbers are still staggering on how many organizations are behind in training leaders within their organizations.  A research article in the Deloitte University Press* states;

“Leadership remains the No. 1 talent issue facing organizations around the world, with 86 percent of respondents in our survey rating it as “urgent” or “important.” Only 13 percent of respondents say they do an excellent job developing leaders at all levels—the largest “readiness gap” in our survey.” Deloitte University Press

If 86% of respondents admit that leadership is “urgent” or “important”, but only 13% of respondents are doing anything about it, then where is this disconnect coming from?

The reality of leadership is that most leaders did not ask to lead, and do not realize everyone is a leader in their organization regardless of whether they asked for it or not. As I work with organizations and entrepreneurs, it is clear that personal and professional development is essential and will always be the “golden key” to raising leaders.

This brings me to a recent observation while refereeing a High School Soccer game. While I was refereeing the soccersideline for a Junior Varsity game on the parent side, the home team Varsity Soccer team was causing a ruckus. Yes, this is normal behavior and usually the parents are causing the issue. Back to the team, they were yelling profanity, negative jokes about their own team members, and in general not setting a great example of respect for others.

My response was one of delicate but stern warning, “I only want to hear positive comments and cheering from this section.” The shock and awe of surprise that anyone would call them out on their bad behavior was priceless. I heard a few other comments about me throughout the game, but as usual when refereeing the parent side, most of the comments, slander, and disgust for our calls rolls off our backs.

At the end of the game, I pulled the Varsity coach aside and told him of the incident. “Coach you have a great team this year, and we are the sum of who we choose to hang out with. Your team members are leaders on the sideline, and I know you would not expect anything less of them.” The coach was appreciative, and the next week at the Varsity game the team was a little sheepish, but also seemed to understand the reality of being on a Varsity team. They are leaders. Perhaps not by choice, but now they are aware that they are leaders and people will follow.

Here are a few ideas for a Leadership Plan:

  • Internal training program: Develop a video series or testing series to continually add value and knowledge.
  • Budget for training/education leadership programs: Reinstitute or create these programs. Many organizations cut these programs in 2008 and did not bring them back.
  • Mentorship programs: These programs are the most cost effective and added value to your organization. Current leaders are sharing, pouring, and also learning from those who they are mentoring. No longer does the organization have an intellectual property “leak” because knowledge is being shared.
  • Leadership assessments: Have you interviewed and given all of your team members a leadership assessment? Seniority should not dictate promotion; the most prepared and willing should be your next promotion.
  • Succession planning: Does your organization have a plan in place for all leadership roles?

I build content and programs for organizations, and the first thing I ask for is an outline of the above. And if there is content for the programs, I ask for that as well. You see, 100% of organizations have blind spots in developing and lifting leaders in their organization. Not by neglect, but by default.

I welcome your questions on where to start or am willing to look at your current plan. Please contact us today, as we are committed to adding value to leaders–which is everyone. Reality kicks our pants! No matter what you do or where you are, people are looking to you for the next step through your actions.

What is your secret sauce to being a difference maker in your life?

Attitude_Sauce Tracy Worley

The basis of leading and making a difference is all about attitude and what it can—and cannot—do for you and those around you. I have a confession to make. Early in my career and youth, I was the one where my parents and co-workers would look at me and say, “Check the attitude at the door.” I did not have a bad attitude, but a very inquisitive one, and had not yet learned how to harness my “why” questions to team build. The way I asked questions did not build collaboration but separation.

To sustain success you cannot separate self-esteem, character, or attitude. All three must be part of your reality to lead authentically and to be a difference maker.

From The Difference Maker here are some areas to consider for reflection and change toward making the difference you desire:

  • Attitude cannot substitute for competence
    • Competence is what is needed to accomplish a job, but attitude completes the circle of contentment and daily joy, not only for yourself but also for those around you.
  • Attitude helps with your health (mental and physical)
    • Change if you can.
    • If you cannot change your circumstances, then change your attitude.
  • Attitude takes work.
    • Personal growth should be part of your daily and weekly calendar.
    • Don’t give up even when it feels like the easy thing to do.

Creating a plan to be a difference maker in attitude and understanding reality does not substitute for choosing your attitude. In 2011 on a brief phone call, I learned I no longer was employed due to a third round of downsizing. Was this a blow? Absolutely! However, I did not let the experience keep me down. I kept a forward vision and took actions one step at a time, even if they were baby steps toward the future I desired and deserve.

Moving forward has everything to do with a positive attitude, perseverance, and not sitting in a stinky pool of pity. I kept moving forward toward the next adventure in making a difference in other people’s lives. I hope you are one of those people.

Challenge Question: What is in your calendar to ensure you are not sitting in a stinky pool of pity?
