I was ALIVE ON ARRIVAL! As humans we should show up with intention and ‘alive’ in everything we do. There are always the few who show up because they have to. These are the individuals I like to “light” up! Giving them other perspective and a reason for being there and how they add value.

When I work with organizations in employee engagement we always start with a survey to see where the engagement needle is and the culture. I can say 99% of the time when engagement is low there is little trust and/or respect to and from leadership.
Here are a few steps to engaging yourself:
- Discuss and outline your vision and navigate where you are going. The more people you share this with the more likely you will find the resources needed to launch to the next level.
- Set exceptions by creating and modeling the who you want to show up in your personal and professional life.
- Connect with clients on personal level (i.e. paraphrase what they have said, or remember your last conversation such as if they mentioned a soccer game ask them how it went)
- Connect and collaboration with peers by setting parameters of expectation, timelines, etc. . .(this always resolves who is responsible for which task, and accountability for the entire team)
- Connect with people by having one-on-ones (be candid and transparent where you are, and they will be candid and transparent where they are on projects, hurdles, and how they plan to overcome them) “I CAN’T RAISE THE BAR FOR OTHERS IF I HAVEN’T RAISED THE BAR FOR MYSELF.
The core of engagement is transparent humility (this is not showing employees or clients how to weep but to let them know you are human, everyone wants to know they are on the team with someone who has heart)

One of my greatest mentors and teachers John C. Maxwell taught me, “people remember how you made them feel.” As I traverse from coaching executives to corporate teams the common denominators are “feelings” and “communication”.
Have you heard “this is business, there is no room for feelings in business“, or some other derivative of it? Well, there is room; people remember how you made them feel over all else. Yes, they remember how they feel over you making them millions, cured their cancer, helped them solve a large issue.

Few Things To Consider:
- Can you listen without bias or judgment?
- When did you lift some one else to promotion?
- Can you identify the last time you invited someone to an event; introduced them to people they need to know to grow?
- Are you leading from behind the curtain or in front of the curtain?

All success comes from an individual perspective in measurable increments. For organizations it comes from their perspective initiatives and the perspective of gain or loss.
One of the top reasons I adore about living in Montana, USA is the rugged back country is close and tangible. I find myself in a National Forest several times a week and if possible daily. No matter what trail my administrative staff and I hike; there is always an elevation gain or loss.
Success also has a measure of gain or loss dependent on your initiatives and goals. I recently read, “The only person who needs to move forward little by little is you. Engineer your own evolution” ~ E. Burger, M. Starbird.
When I read evolution my reaction was, “Yes, success is creating your own revolution from the norms of how others have accomplished success.”
As you create goals there are meaningful ways to ensure a gain:
- Move little by little toward the goal.
- Reiterate and refine past and current knowledge to create progress.
- The more you learn; the easier the pieces fall into place toward success.
- Ask someone to walk along side of you; a team member, partner, or business coach.
Moving little by little is like climbing a trail. It takes step by step, bit by bit to make it to your destination and crest the top. Once you are at the crest you will see a higher peak (next goal) to strive toward. There are times you may need to lose elevation to glean new knowledge, understand the depth of measurable increments, and evaluate timing.
Refining knowledge is where most entrepreneurs and organizations lose traction. The tendency is to gobble up all information, processes, and best practices. This tendency hinders progress of little by little; often creating a stale environment of growth and innovation. To keep on track, define your objective clearly then adopt, adapt, or delete best practices and move forward.
Each goal has its own trail of learned knowledge. Success can happen time after time hiking the same trail. However, conditions can change and new knowledge is gleaned from season to season. Business perspective; who is on your team creating a stale mate, are clients engaging, is it time to adopt, adapt, or change trails to new success?
The hard truth is not one person or organization creates success on their own. There is always someone supporting them in one manner or another. There are teams who sustain forward momentum to success and community who purchases services and or products. The basic truth not often seen are those who blazed the trail ahead of us. A back country hiking trail is often not for the faint of heart. There is a lot of elevation gain, loss, gain, loss and keeps going until final destination. A back country trail is not managed and if it is there is a group of volunteers who hike in with band-saws and other gear to keep the trail clear (chain saws are not permitted due to fire danger, there are no motor vehicles allowed). From back country hiking to entrepreneurial paths cleared there is always someone who blazed the trail or idea ahead of us. It is your responsibility to create synergy and innovation from what is already forged.
“If I have seen farther than others it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants” ~ Isaac Newton. Bring someone on board to create and sustain your momentum toward your goals bit by bit. No matter what or who you bring on board it is important to be open-minded about possibilities not seen at the beginning of the trail.

Summer is here! Even though Summer Solstice has not come yet; schools are letting out, sunshine is drawing us outdoors, and attention to goals diminish.
It is normal to have a hit of nostalgia and be drawn to the warmth of the sun. What I have found with clients and myself enjoying the summer; professional goals slide off track.

Here are a few things to consider to keeping your goals on track:
- One Word
- Changing one word can change your world and vision for what is possible. Change up the statement “I plan” to “I will” or to ” I am”. Our minds are beautiful in setting sub-conscious intentions when we state what and where we want to be in current circumstance.
- Main Thing
- Keep the main thing the main thing. You will have several higher objectives for the year and quarters. Look at your calendar and see if there are people, places, and things setting you off course of your main thing.
- Everything is Measurable
- From phone calls, emails, social media, client satisfaction, team engagement, learning new skills, deleting old skills; everything is measurable.

Did you know customer service is your brand?
This past week I experienced two significant customer service scenarios. As providers we forget clients are humans and remember first and foremost how we made them feel.
Your clients can and will purchase product/services from competitors. Clients will do so even if your competitor’s product is inferior to yours; where clients feel valued is where they will purchase.
The first is I called our phone provider for service. I was on the phone for over 40 minutes with no resolution to our issue. At this juncture I had to jump off the call to make my coaching client call. I went to a local store for help and again no resolution. As a human being these are hours I cannot get back and “no” return on my time. How did I resolve our issue? I called the phone manufacture directly and they took care of me promptly, with care, and had a replacement the next day. We are now under serious consideration to move our business elsewhere as this company is consistent in not caring for clients.
The second customer service experience is with a direct product company. I have been a customer with them for about seven years and certainly have not spent as much money or years with them as I have with our phone provider. My experience with the call was prompt, courteous, and resolved my human-error issue without judgment. I received great care and concern for my order. I walked away with a huge return on my time as this conversation was less than 15 minutes and I felt like a winner.

This brings me to your brand. How you and your employees show up is your brand and how referrals if any will be passed forward. Here are a few things to consider:
- Does your organization take action in what you say you will do?
- Does your organization go out of your way to welcome clients?
- Does your organization stay in contact with previous clients?
- Does your organization empower your clients to succeed with your product and/or service?
- How do clients feel when they have shopped or received your services?
- Biggie! What are you and your employees posting on social media?

I love people watching and am keen observer of their actions. Two of my higher level strengths is connecting and relating. These two strengths are so strong and developed that at a networking event I can tell you who belongs to who, who is avoiding who, and who doesn’t belong to who but spending a lot of time together.
Don’t worry I do not share your secrets. I have discovered and noticed as an increasing technology society we are leading our lives under Fitbit rules. These are just a few ways society is being led by technology.
- When to take action (beeps when you have been sitting for an hour)
- Calculating goals for you (calculates what your goals should be)
- Celebration (lets you know when you have reached your daily goal)
- Pulse, Sleep (keeps track of your pulse, sleep habits, calories, etc.)
- Distance (lets you know if you have made the distance goal, redundancy implied)
My question to you as a leader, are you finding the pulse of your people?
People do not know where they are going unless goals and the path are laid out. When goals and the path is not clear; people set their own goals, or end up somewhere else. “People need responsibility, they resist assuming it, but they cannot get along without it.” ~ John Steinbeck
As a leader of “self” what actions are you not fol
lowing through on? Your actions are being shown in large lights and even in Fitbit rules your actions are shown with a back-light in the dark. There is not hiding your leading actions, so again I ask as a leader of “self” what actions are you not following through on?

Below are five areas of connection and caring actions to bring into the bright lights of your leadership. The pulse of the people is hungry for strong leaders without oppression and modeling success with transparent integrity.
- Consistent in Challenging your team: create goals for them and push toward the next level of success
- Cheerful Confidence believing in their talents: bring people into their strengths and they will start believing in their success too.
- Creative Conversation leads to innovation: bring shifts to conversation to bring back sanity from the insanity of having the same conversation bringing the same results.
- Commit to leading yourself and others: invest in adding value by education, growth-opportunities, coaching, mentorship programs, etc. . . .
- Communicate Clearly and speak truth: crucial conversation with brings about a quicker shift in success for you, your people and the organization.
Change the pulse of your people to healthy conversation around the water cooler, if you do not give them knowledge, goals, and sustainable actions they will make it up, gossip, or go somewhere else. “All human beings by nature desire to know.” ~ Aristotle
In “celebration hands” I applaud you and celebrate your success!

Most of us end up in a leadership role by being promoted or asked to take over projects at an ever growing rapid pace. Common practice is to promote those with seniority, even if the employee is given no management or leadership training.
The numbers are still staggering on how many organizations are behind in training leaders within their organizations. A research article in the Deloitte University Press* states;
“Leadership remains the No. 1 talent issue facing organizations around the world, with 86 percent of respondents in our survey rating it as “urgent” or “important.” Only 13 percent of respondents say they do an excellent job developing leaders at all levels—the largest “readiness gap” in our survey.” Deloitte University Press
If 86% of respondents admit that leadership is “urgent” or “important”, but only 13% of respondents are doing anything about it, then where is this disconnect coming from?
The reality of leadership is that most leaders did not ask to lead, and do not realize everyone is a leader in their organization regardless of whether they asked for it or not. As I work with organizations and entrepreneurs, it is clear that personal and professional development is essential and will always be the “golden key” to raising leaders.
This brings me to a recent observation while refereeing a High School Soccer game. While I was refereeing the sideline for a Junior Varsity game on the parent side, the home team Varsity Soccer team was causing a ruckus. Yes, this is normal behavior and usually the parents are causing the issue. Back to the team, they were yelling profanity, negative jokes about their own team members, and in general not setting a great example of respect for others.
My response was one of delicate but stern warning, “I only want to hear positive comments and cheering from this section.” The shock and awe of surprise that anyone would call them out on their bad behavior was priceless. I heard a few other comments about me throughout the game, but as usual when refereeing the parent side, most of the comments, slander, and disgust for our calls rolls off our backs.
At the end of the game, I pulled the Varsity coach aside and told him of the incident. “Coach you have a great team this year, and we are the sum of who we choose to hang out with. Your team members are leaders on the sideline, and I know you would not expect anything less of them.” The coach was appreciative, and the next week at the Varsity game the team was a little sheepish, but also seemed to understand the reality of being on a Varsity team. They are leaders. Perhaps not by choice, but now they are aware that they are leaders and people will follow.
Here are a few ideas for a Leadership Plan:
- Internal training program: Develop a video series or testing series to continually add value and knowledge.
- Budget for training/education leadership programs: Reinstitute or create these programs. Many organizations cut these programs in 2008 and did not bring them back.
- Mentorship programs: These programs are the most cost effective and added value to your organization. Current leaders are sharing, pouring, and also learning from those who they are mentoring. No longer does the organization have an intellectual property “leak” because knowledge is being shared.
- Leadership assessments: Have you interviewed and given all of your team members a leadership assessment? Seniority should not dictate promotion; the most prepared and willing should be your next promotion.
- Succession planning: Does your organization have a plan in place for all leadership roles?
I build content and programs for organizations, and the first thing I ask for is an outline of the above. And if there is content for the programs, I ask for that as well. You see, 100% of organizations have blind spots in developing and lifting leaders in their organization. Not by neglect, but by default.

- Each week is a different topic, and everyone has 2 minutes to share their feelings, opinions, and experience

- This maybe a lunch outside of the office
- A stroll around your office grounds or a local park
- Go to the zoo
- Bring in a speaker to motivate, inspire, and empower
- You can find someone in your community or if budget allows bring someone in that resonates with any pain points you are experiencing
- Laugher is the healing compound and the B12 shot for any organization and team
- Is there levity allowed in the office
- Is there a place where your team members can go to blow off steam through laughing, crying, and supporting each other

These are just a few ideas of connecting and creating a culture of sustained employee engagement and loyalty. Ninety percent of people leave an organization because of people. I challenge you to be the 10% where people do not leave because of other people but because you engaged, mentored, and gave them value to find bigger and better opportunities.
Begin creating a culture of; mentoring, engaging, and adding value to groom them to leave hits most of us in the big old’ PRIDE button. Some of you are asking or stopped reading; why would I want to groom them to leave? My question is why wouldn’t you? Engaged employees who have been valued, mentored, and engaged are your biggest advocates outside of your organization.

Have you noticed when people ask you why, it forces you to dig deeper in intellectual reasoning and sometimes your WHY is not big enough.
Curiosity is a developed thirst for knowledge, interest in life, people, ideas, experiences, events, and living in a state of wanting to learn more.
The more you know compounds interest in knowledge, wisdom, and awareness to the next steps of success.
